Can we control our dreams?
Updated: 09-May-2025

Yes, it is possible to control your dreams through a phenomenon known as lucid dreaming. A lucid dream occurs when you become aware that you’re dreaming while still asleep. In some cases, dreamers can even influence or direct the events within the dream.

Lucid dreaming happens naturally for some people, but others can train themselves to experience it more often. Techniques include:

  • Reality checks: Asking yourself during the day, “Am I dreaming?” By making this a habit, you might start doing it while dreaming, triggering lucidity.

  • Dream journaling: Writing down your dreams every morning can help improve dream recall and make you more aware of dream patterns.

  • Mnemonic induction: Repeating a phrase before sleep like, “Tonight, I will realize I am dreaming,” can increase chances of lucidity.

Once lucid, people can explore dream worlds, face fears, fly, or practice skills like public speaking or sports. Some use lucid dreams for creative inspiration, claiming to generate ideas for stories, music, or inventions.

However, lucid dreaming isn’t always easy or risk-free. Some people experience sleep paralysis, a temporary inability to move when waking up or falling asleep. Others may find lucid dreams too intense or tiring if practiced too often.

Scientists are still studying lucid dreams to understand how the brain behaves during these states. Brain scans show high activity in the prefrontal cortex, the part involved in decision-making and self-awareness, which is usually less active during normal dreams.

While not everyone experiences lucid dreams, many people can learn to control their dreams with practice. It’s a fascinating blend of conscious awareness and subconscious imagination, offering unique opportunities for exploration and self-discovery.
