What are the fundamental rights provided by the Indian Constitution?
Updated: 09-May-2025

The Indian Constitution guarantees Fundamental Rights to all citizens under Part III, Articles 12 to 35. These rights are essential for the overall development of individuals and are enforceable by courts. They protect the dignity, freedom, and equality of every person.

There are six main Fundamental Rights:

  1. Right to Equality (Articles 14–18):
This guarantees equality before the law and equal protection under the law. It prohibits discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth. It also abolishes untouchability and titles (except military or academic honors).

  2. Right to Freedom (Articles 19–22):
It includes freedom of speech and expression, assembly, association, movement, residence, and the right to practice any profession. It also includes protection in respect of conviction and arrest under certain conditions.

  3. Right against Exploitation (Articles 23–24):
This prohibits human trafficking, forced labor, and employment of children in hazardous industries.

  4. Right to Freedom of Religion (Articles 25–28):
All citizens have the right to freely practice, profess, and propagate any religion, or not follow any religion at all. It ensures India’s secular character.

  5. Cultural and Educational Rights (Articles 29–30):
These rights protect the interests of minorities by allowing them to preserve their culture and establish educational institutions.

  6. Right to Constitutional Remedies (Article 32):
This allows individuals to approach the Supreme Court or High Courts to protect their rights. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar called this the "heart and soul" of the Constitution.

These rights are not absolute and can be restricted under certain conditions for reasons like public order or national security. Still, they form the backbone of Indian democracy.

Fundamental Rights are essential to ensure freedom, dignity, and justice for every Indian citizen, making the Constitution a living document that protects and empowers the people.
