What are Climate Feedback Loops? Provide examples.
Updated: 09-May-2025

Climate feedback loops are processes that can either amplify or dampen the effects of climate change. There are two types:

  • Positive Feedback: Accelerates warming.

  • Negative Feedback: Reduces warming.

Examples of Positive Feedback:

  • Ice-Albedo Effect: Melting ice reduces Earth's reflectivity (albedo), so more sunlight is absorbed, causing further warming and melting.

  • Permafrost Thaw: Melting permafrost releases methane, a potent GHG, intensifying warming.

Examples of Negative Feedback:

  • Increased plant growth due to higher CO₂ levels may absorb more CO₂.

  • Cloud formation could reflect sunlight and cool the Earth.

Understanding these loops is critical in predicting future climate scenarios and planning mitigation efforts.
